Hello Fitness Magazine

Pelvic floor muscles are the muscles at the bottom of the pelvis and play a pivotal role in maintaining good condition, especially for women. In a Q&A session, the leading Physiotherapist of Surat, Dr. Nidhi Patel, sheds some light on pelvic floor rehabilitation and its significance.

1. What is pelvic floor rehabilitation?

It is an exercise program for muscles of the pelvic floor that play a pivotal role in controlling the opening and closing of three crucial systems of our body - mainly the reproductive, digestive and urinary systems.

2. What problems do weak pelvic floor muscles cause?

The most common condition is urinary incontinence which is urinary leakage whenever you cough, sneeze, jump, or engage in any other activity that exerts pressure on your pelvic floor muscles.

Importance of the Pelvic Floor During Pregnancy

Pelvic floor muscles play a vital role during pregnancy and labour. They support the entire body weight of the baby. The pelvis muscles remain contracted throughout pregnancy to hold the baby's position. During birth labour, this muscle stretches 300 times to open the birth canal to allow the birth of a baby. If these muscles are weak during pregnancy, additional support is provided in the form of stitches, or the person may be advised bed rest.

1. Who can provide pelvic floor rehabilitation?

A physical therapist with expertise in pelvic floor rehabilitation can only practice this approach. If you are suffering from urinary incontinence, the post-partum feeling of a loose vagina, or are unable to hold your urine for a prolonged duration, then it’s time to consult a pelvic floor rehabilitator.

2. How would you address myths about pelvic floor muscles?

People generally have a myth that only females have pelvic floor issues, whereas even males face the issues of pelvic floor muscles. Additionally, urine leakage is normal post-partum, due to age or high-intensity activity, but these can be resolved by seeking appropriate help. Kegels do help but cannot solve all pelvic floor dysfunctions. If Kegel has not worked, a pelvic floor therapist can help. It’s also not normal to experience uncomfortable or painful sex as you age or after pregnancy. It is not normal to strain during bowel movement. Special soaps and gels do not help maintain vaginal health. It's also not normal to pee ‘just in case’ before leaving the house.

3. How to keep your pelvic floor healthy?

Regular pelvic floor exercises are helpful. Avoid smoking and reduce your intake of caffeine. Learn proper lifting techniques. Weight loss is necessary if you are overweight
