Hooked on Screens: An Epidemic of Digital Addiction

Hooked on Screens: An Epidemic of Digital Addiction

Dr.Sudipta Roy, Clinical Psychologist

Screens have become an integral part of our daily lives, from smartphones to tablets to computers and game consoles. However, many people are experiencing excessive screen time, leading to addiction. This digital addiction epidemic is causing concern among psychologists and mental health experts about the impact of these technologies on our brains and well-being. It's a common sight to see people with their heads down, eyes glued to their flashing screens, whether waiting in line, riding the metro, or sitting in the park.

Research has revealed alarming statistics about the prevalence of screen addiction. In the Indian context, a study found that the prevalence of internet addiction was 1.3% in the general population. This number increased almost tenfold to 11.8% among college students. Another study reported that 37% of Indian school-going children were addicted to the Internet. Many people are now becoming aware of the addictive nature of technology. The key now is to raise awareness about healthy web technology habits and help those already addicted to screens before irreparable damage is done.

As screen time increases, how can one recognize when technology use becomes harmful?

  1. One warning sign is when people turn to technology to avoid negative emotions or boredom, instead of engaging in real-world activities.
  2. Over time, many people have come to prefer online interactions rather than in-person relationships. This trend can lead to a loss of important social skills and tolerance in real-world relationships.
  3. Many individuals become so engrossed in their online activities that they lose track of time. Some even deceive their family members about the extent of their mobile and laptop usage.
  4. One red flag to watch for is mood changes resulting from excessive screen time. If a person becomes irritable, restless, or even aggressive when not allowed to use a device, it could indicate dependence rather than healthy enjoyment.
  5. Compulsively checking phones and apps interrupts focus and suggests an obsession with technology.

The moderate use of digital media can enhance our modern lifestyle, but certain behaviors may indicate that excessive screen time is causing harm. In fact, similar to other types of addiction, experiencing tolerance, cravings, and withdrawal symptoms can be a sign that an individual has moved from healthy usage of technology to an unhealthy one.

What is happening in the brain to cause these addictive behaviors

Research suggests that screen activities can activate the brain's dopamine-seeking pathways, which are associated with addiction and rewards. Spending more time scrolling social media or playing games can result in the release of more dopamine, which reinforces the behavior. The constant novelty and interactive features of screens can also condition the brain to seek constant stimulation. Furthermore, excessive screen time can impair attention spans, cognitive control, and emotional regulation in a similar way to substance abuse. Social media platforms and apps use algorithms and notification designs to encourage habitual checking and engagement.

The question then arises - What are the real-world psychological impacts of uncontrolled technology use?

Excessive screen time has been scientifically linked to a range of negative effects. These include an increased risk of anxiety, depression, impulsivity, and sleep disorders, particularly among young people. Heavy screen users may also experience poor social skills and isolation as face-to-face interactions are replaced by online engagement. Spending excessive time in digital environments can lead to a lack of motivation for real-world achievements, as well as distorted views that place more value on virtual experiences than physical ones. Moreover, research demonstrates that frequent users may experience decreased attention spans, reduced self-control, increased agitation, sleep disturbances, poor quality of sleep, and heightened emotions. Just as substance abuse can harm health and functioning, technology addiction can also impair users' mental well-being and relationships.

Mental health professionals, particularly psychologists, can play a significant role in preventing and managing the addictive use of screens and its negative effects. There are various ways in which they can contribute - those who are already displaying unhealthy dependencies on screens, can be treated and managed through cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on modifying thoughts and behaviors. Support groups can also provide a sense of community and accountability on the path to recovery. Additionally, digital detoxes and "dopamine fasting" can allow the brain to reset from constant stimulation, while gradually increasing offline activities and social connections can help fill the void left by reducing screen time. Just like with other addictions, external controls such as parental controls or monitoring software may be needed initially. Overcoming screen addiction is not easy, but it is possible with time, effort, and support. Restoring balance and self-control over technology use can enhance productivity, relationships, and overall well-being.

Preventing unhealthy dependencies is crucial to protect a larger population from addiction. Several practical strategies can help users, especially parents and kids, to achieve a balance in their digital lives. For instance, setting limits and curfews on tech usage provides structure, such as not using phones at the dinner table or turning off all devices an hour before bedtime. Designating tech-free zones in homes and workplaces creates physical spaces for real-world connections.

Users should conduct an honest audit of which apps and sites are distracting and which are enriching, deleting problematic accounts and disabling unnecessary notifications to remove temptation. Intentionally scheduling interesting offline activities such as exercise, hobbies, and social events can prevent boredom that can trigger excessive scrolling.

Parents should lead by example and model healthy device habits themselves instead of relying on the "do as I say, not as I do" approach. Families can hold each other accountable using tracking apps or designating days each week as tech-free.

The key is to be mindful and establish rituals that focus on real-world friends and activities over virtual engagements. Though it is not easy in our hyperconnected world, achieving balance frees users from tech overload and helps them rediscover the joys of physical human connection.

In today's digital era, it is crucial to maintain a healthy balance between technology use and real-world engagement. This article has highlighted the serious risks of screen addiction, such as impaired mental health, diminished social skills, and distorted priorities that undervalue real-life experiences. However, technology is also a powerful tool that can enhance our modern lives when used positively and in moderation. The solution is to raise awareness about the dangers of digital addiction while promoting mindful consumption of enriching online content. By setting habits and boundaries that enable technology to be integrated into daily living without dominating it, we can leverage its benefits while avoiding pitfalls. To this end, we have launched a SHOUT Clinic at my center (Services for Healthy and Optimum Use of Technology), modeled after the SHUT clinic at NIMHANS, Bengaluru. We aim to help those affected by digital addiction detoxify and develop new habits.
