Hello Fitness Magazine

We have a lot of fitness enthusiasts in our kitty. But how well do we know fitness? Hello Fitness Magazine encounters Dr. Anmol Jogani, a physiotherapist by profession who runs a fitness studio called Fitt by Anmol, enlightened us about fitness from a doctor's point of view.

Fitness is something that has taken our lives for a decade, and since the year 2020, we have realised how important this is in our day to day lives.

We understand that anything in demand or popularity, people use it erratically anywhere. However, we have now taken it in a pervasive way. Strength training and cardio are like dairy milk and gems.

Unaware of what's needed for whom and in what proportion, we are just employing and executing things we hear, understand on our own or what we see on others and social media.

Fitness is a long continuous process for everyone ranging from a four-year-old kid to an adult, an athlete, someone who wants to lose weight or gain, a pregnant lady, a 45-year-old guy having heart issues and a 60-year-old female who needs fundamental muscle strength. So we need to keep the spectrum broad.

There are five essential fitness components called health-related components, understanding the science of these. They need to be taken care of when one wants to be fit. They are:

1. Body Composition

Body Composition relates to the relative amounts of muscle, fat, bone, and other vital parts of the body. In our industry, BMI, percentage of fat, percentage of muscle etc., are a part of this.

2. Cardiovascular endurance

Cardiovascular endurance relates to the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen during sustained physical fitness. One of the most common methods is measuring VO2 max, a person's capacity for aerobic re-synthesis. Aerobic fitness implies muscular work under aerobic conditions, and it involves all aspects of uptake, transport and utilisation of oxygen to liberate energy from muscle. We can measure it by putting the heart on a constant treadmill or beep test. The closer we are to this test, the healthier our heart and organs of the body are.

3. Flexibility

Flexibility relates to the range of motion available at a joint. Flexibility is essential for the correct and efficient execution of any workout. Training for this regularly causes connective tissue to loosen and elongate and avoids any stiffness and tightness in the body, and also an individual is also less prone to injuries. The most basic test is the hamstring flexibility test

4. Muscular endurance

Muscular endurance is related to the muscle's ability to perform without fatigue. Muscular endurance is specific. To accurately assess muscular endurance, it would be necessary to test each muscle (upper, middle and lower quadrant). The basic test is pushup, squats and plank, respectively, in a minute to measure muscle endurance.

5. Muscular strength

Muscular strength relates to the ability of the muscle to exert force. It would be necessary to test each muscle group of the body. Fitness enthusiasts should display moderate to high dynamic strength characteristics of the lower and upper extremities. The most basic test is to measure the RM (Repetition Maximum), which is the maximum weight a person can lift. For example, ten kg for ten squats is ten RM squats for that individual.

So the above are the primary health components that need to be a part of their fitness regime.

In this fitness process, let's not be blindsided and instead pay attention to the health components of the body over the aesthetic appearance. From a doctor's point of view, HEALTH IS WEALTH; devote time for it before you lose out on it all.
