Truth About an Apple
From early childhood, we have heard our parents, grandparents, and absolutely all adults say, that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But does it really?
The Myth
Well, to break your bubble peeps, there’s no proper proof or research conclusion that can say for the fact that apple a day keeps the doctor away, and very much so, given if it were true, the apple industry must have been booming like anything, and Indian parents would stop coaxing their children to become doctors! But the idiom was coined by our ancestors, and hence can’t be completely bogus!
The Reality
It's non-argumentative that regular intake of fruits, including apples, does wonders for our health! In fact, apple has so many benefits, that regular intake can reduce your trips to doctors and pharmacists. Apples are very rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants, minerals, and fibres. Those beautiful delicious apples can also help avoid chronic diseases, including heart disease. It lowers the risk of stroke, the flavonoids help reduce inflammation and protect the health of your dear heart, and the soluble fibres reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Did you know that apples can also help reduce the risk of cancer? Yes! It reduces the risk of lung cancer, and colorectal cancer, and can shield from cancer of the stomach, lungs, and oesophagus! It also helps create a shield against asthma and diabetes.
Due to their rich fibre content, apples reduce calorie intake and help in weight loss. It effortlessly increases our bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. What’s more? Ooh, apples can help reduce oxidative stress, reduce mental decline, and slow signs of ageing!!! That, our dear readers, should close the deal!
The Origin of the Expression
A Pembrokeshire proverb originated in 1866, that said, “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread!” Well, that’s a little harsh for our dear doctors! So, the other expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ was first coined in 1913.
