Vibes, Music and Mindfulness - Nikhil Dhingra on the floor!

Hello FItness Magazine

Who is Nikhil Dhingra? Nikhil Dhingra, dancer and choreographer, is a joyful, chivalrous, devoid of drama, and a very simplistic man who is obsessed with the colour black. Being a no tantrum kid since childhood, Nikhil is a focussed man who is creative, hardworking, and dedicated towards his desires and goals. This man has very simplistic goals in life. A chilled-out guy who loves vibing with friends and family and an utter lover of parties. Nikhil is passionate about his work and hence is working 18 hrs/day, officially making him workaholic. “Sunday is the worst day of the week,” quotes Nikhil as he’s got no work to do which makes him more irritable.

“Let your fan be a fan and a friend be a friend.”

Like everyone Nikhil has two faces - professional and personal. This doesn’t make him arrogant but practical. Practically, he is kind enough to pass you a smile when you smile at him but one cannot expect him to start a conversation with a stranger while in the middle of the way. Contradictory to it, he loves interacting with strangers when he is enjoying his solitude with his coffee and his favourite book. Next time you see Nikhil sitting alone in a corner of a cafe with a book in his hand and coffee in the other, feel free to break the ice with him.

SEEKING THE INSPIRATION

Being in a big fat Punjabi family, Nikhil Dhingra is the only man in the entire Dhingra family to be into such a creative field. On asking him about it, he was kind enough to share his story of inspiration. Like every teenage boy, Nikhil too had a girlfriend back in 10th grade. His girlfriend had all the plans made for herself to be a fashion designer. An instant response to the counter question asked by her girlfriend was, “If I am not doing any other professional thing, I’ll become a dance teacher.” to which she mocked and thought it to be an immature decision.

Dancing has always been his passion. While in school he used to choreograph dances for older kids and that was fun for him. His teachers and peers would await his performance and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. As the school and college ended, so did his passion for dancing take a back seat. Entering the world of textiles was his destiny written by his father and grandfathers. But this man couldn’t stand the unorganised and annoying world of textiles and decided to follow his passion nonetheless.

This decision of his shook two people, one his dad and the other his girlfriend. “You can break up with your girlfriend but you can’t break up with your father.” His father disregarded his decision of becoming a “dance teacher” which can never earn him any bread and butter, according to him. Nikhil was adamant about his decision and set out his path to prove his father wrong. For a year, the father-son had a rough patch owing to the generation gap and difference of opinion. But ultimately, Nikhil was successful in proving his point right and bridge the gap between him and his father.

Nikhil points out that the opposition from his father and the break up from his girlfriend somewhere proved to be an ignition to his goals. And that he will always be grateful to his Dad for making him realise his worth.

After this, Nikhil became a torchbearer in his family which lead his cousins to take up their passion as a profession

NIKHIL & MULTITASKING ARE TWO PATHS THAT CAN NEVER MEET

Nikhil is terrible at multitasking; so as confirmed by his wife. While he is surfing on the phone or watching his favourite web series on TV, there are chances of him missing out on the intricate details that you wish to inform him about. While it is useless to talk to him when he is busy on the smart gadget, he is equally engrossed in his dedicated work. It is always one thing at a time for Nikhil and he always prefers giving a 100% dedication to one job that he is doing.

“Men are terrible at multitasking. It is the super power of women!”

WHY THE NAME “VIBE”?

For Nikhil, it is very important to vibe with someone to befriend him/her. Nikhil believes that you possibly don’t vibe with everyone you come across. When he entered his first rented place for a dance studio, he instantly connected with it and vibed. He endured the first positive vibe of the place and he decided to name it “NDvibe”.

If I don’t vibe with someone, I wouldn’t even talk to them. I don’t ignore them but I try to avoid meeting them by all means.”

DANCE IS AN EMOTION

Nikhil might not have been professionally trained in the different dance forms but he likes to be updated with the same through workshops. Be it Salsa, Bachata, Bhangra, Hip Hop, he’s done it all but according to him nothing beats the Bollywood style. For Nikhil dancing is all about emotions and creativity and Bollywood has it all.

Asking about his favourite Indian dance style, “Kathak”, came the reply. According to ND, a dance should make one feel happy, sad or in love and Kathak has the magic of expressions.

“The dancing should be effortless and come out naturally for having the “love” factor in it. Prabhu Deva has a “wow'' factor whereas Madhuri Dixit has a “love” factor. Similarly, Tiger Shroff has a “wow” factor whereas Hrithik Roshan has a “love” factor.”

Nikhil is one unbiased teacher. All those who put efforts in the practice and during the learning phase are his favourites. Nikhil prioritises practice over performance.

“Efforts and hard work during the preparation is always more important than the final performance.”

THE COVID TIMES

Like everybody else Nikhil too faced a downfall during covid - physically, mentally and economically. But Nikhil Dhingra being one strong headed and a dedicated man didn’t let it affect him. He could recover well within 6 to 8 months. And instead of sitting and sulking at home, he adapted to the new change happening all round. He too plunged into the virtual world of the internet.

It was his dream to open his “NDVibe” dance studio in every corner of the city. Today with the help of the internet he is able to reach every household.

“The globe is my classroom!” quoted the enthusiastic dancer.

According to him, the pandemic was necessary in everyone’s life. It gave people the time to pause and re-consider certain decisions of life. Pandemic brought him closer to his father and gave the chance to know him more. It helped so many explore new talents and identities. It personally helped him learn new skills and helped him grow digitally as much as physically.

“Online workshops and Instagram reels have become my thing now and I am loving this change.”

DANCING FOR LIFE

Dancing in itself is a great way to shed some calories and remain fit. Nikhil is not a huge fan of dumb-bells and treadmills. One of the prime reasons for Nikhil being physically so fit is his dance routines. Apart from dancing he is one mindful and conscious food consumer. He is a foodie but when it comes to health he makes sure that he doesn’t end up upsetting his tummy by eating a load of trash.

“Diabetes is in my family and I do not wish to pass on the same to my son!”

There is no mood for dancing. Dancing comes from within and naturally to Nikhil. It takes no prior preparation of a dance routine for Nikhil. You play the music and he can start dancing and teaching.

Nikhil is humble enough to admit that there are better dancers than him and even praises his students for being one. But there is one thing he takes pride in is his dance teaching skills and there is no better teacher than him when it comes to teaching dance.

“Once a 75 year old lady told me that little man you can make anybody dance,” with a modest smile on his face ND recalled the incident.

Choreography is a field of competition. But Nikhil is chilled out and a very non-competitive person. He knows his work the best and genuinely respects the work of others.

“I would rather focus on my work than wasting my time and energy on other people's work! Everybody has their own set of talents and I respect each one of them. I have never seen my contemporaries as my competition!”

PRIORITISING THE MENTAL PEACE

Nikhil is not just obsessed with dancing. Mental breakdowns do occur for Nikhil and there are ways that he handles it very well. Nikhil loves long drives and is one of the best remedies for upliftment of his moods. He loves taking road trips while his family is lounging on the passenger and back seats. Nikhil aspires to explore the entire country in his car.

This creative man has a profound interest in watching various web series depicting various cultures from various parts of the world.

When asked, where does he see himself in the next 5 years? He replied, “It’s like asking a 5 year old kid its aspirations for the future!”

“But, whatsoever, will the situation may be, I will always try to adapt to the change and work accordingly. I’ll learn it, adapt it and grow with it!

Nikhil lives his life king-size without regrets. He never compromises on his happiness, be it materialistic or mental. So he is to his loved ones, especially to his son.

FINE ADVICE FOR TODAY’S GENERATION

Never give up on your dreams. Stay headstrong, focussed and patient enough to complete your goals because hardwork and perseverance always pays. Also, don’t stick to old rules, be adaptive to the change surrounding you to progress well. Follow your passion so passionately that you never grow tired of your work.

“I will never retire. I want to die in my studio working blissfully!”
