Cycles have been a boon to the human race. Be it for transportation in the earlier times, for advertisements, or for making childhood memories by ringing our way into the streets with our horde of mischievous friends!
But lives have become faster now, and so have our vehicles with motors and engines that can run 60km/hour, which is the need of this day. But, so is to paddle and observe our lives and surrounding steadily, giving our body the much-needed exercise cycling provides and our minds the dose of peace and freshness
Hence, HFM got in touch with Yogesh patel, one enlightened mind who loves cycling and promotes the same loud and bold via Life cycling Green!
“If I get out with a bicycle, I won’t return without riding for at least 30 km.”
The Wheels
Yogesh has always been very fond of sports. But one day, while playing volleyball, he had an accident resulting in a tear in his ligament in the knee. The doctors advised him to confide in swimming and cycling.
He did swimming for two years and then took up cycling more actively.
AIn 2009, he learned via news that numerous people from Pune had decided to paddle their way to Kargil, and the sports fan-who-newly-found-his-haven-in-cycling couldn’t help accompany them with two of his friends.
During that journey, he decided that having a cycling group could be very beneficial. In 2010, a status called Life cycling Green adorned the horizons of Surat.
Life Cycling Green
“My friend and I met a senior cycling group at Dumas, who has been cycling for ten years. While talking to them, we realized that Surat didn’t have cycling sport and wasn’t enlightened when it came to fitness and exercise. So, we decided to make a huge group of it. Those seniors we met at Dumas said they tried but couldn’t.”
It was a difficult task, but Yogesh’s sportsmanship and never-give-up spirit succeeded in the same and gave rise to Life Cycling Green. They called every cyclist in the city and organized a rally. Soon the contacts started pouring in, and their group became bigger and bigger.
“Our main aim is to get people out of their houses and promote cycling. It helps your lungs and teaches you balance. It doesn’t exert any major load on the knee, boosts the functioning of your brain, and can even work as an anti-depressant!”
The biggest hurdle he faced was getting hold of accessories
“Spending even five to six thousand on cycles was not worth it for people. So, we had to bring accessories from Mumbai to encourage people. We never allow riding bicycles without helmets.”
He even went all the way to Bangalore to bring Decathalon to Surat. But since they don’t provide a franchise of the same, in 2013, he assisted them set it up in this city.
Green all the way!
It was astonishing to learn that the entire organization of Life Cycling Green stands very true to its words. In addition to promoting cycling and fitness, they also promote the conservation and preservation of nature.
“We don’t tolerate consumption of tobacco or usage of plastic.”
The Handlebar on the fitness
Yogesh Patel suggests that every individual exercise at least four to five days a week, be it only for 1 hour each day. The form of workout can be anything, be it gymming, weightlifting, swimming, walking, anything!
He resorts to cycling for his mental fitness.
“If something bothers me, I sit silently staring at nothing for a while or go to sleep.”
A seat for GenZs
We asked Yogesh to comment on this blooming and unrestful generation of today – The Genz, and this is what he had to say – “It is important that everyone, the GenZs especially included, indulge in sports activity, that will help them be physically and mentally strong, and also teach them important aspects like endurance and discipline.”
